Mimiko Urges Federal Government to Increase Investment in Health and Education at CUSTECH Convocation Lecture

Dr. Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, former Governor of Ondo State, delivered a lecture titled "Ill-Health and Illiteracy: Siblings' Alliance Against Development" during the maiden convocation lecture of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, on November 28, 2025.

He called on the Federal Government to significantly increase investment in the education and health sectors to combat poverty and foster human capital development.

Mimiko stated that despite recent fiscal reforms aimed at boosting government revenue, such as subsidy removal and exchange-rate unification, Nigeria's human development indicators present a "dismal picture". He emphasized that improved government revenues should be deliberately redirected towards human capital development.

Among the key attendees at the lecture was Captain Idris Ichalla Wada, former Governor of Kogi State.

The lecture was one of several events held for CUSTECH's maiden convocation ceremony, which included the graduation of 266 students on November 29, 2025. The former Ondo State governor also advocated for a redesigned and decentralized school feeding program, proposing a policy of "one egg, one child, one day" to address childhood malnutrition. He argued that increased investment should apply to both federal and state governments to effectively tackle the "alliance of illiteracy and ill-health".
