The Women’s Rights and Health Project (WRAHP), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and combating violence against women and girls, has launched a groundbreaking initiative in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The organization has taken a firm stand against the escalating issue of Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-based Violence (TFSGBV), particularly targeting young people and adolescents.

1. Student Training: WRAHP organized a comprehensive one-day training session aimed at equipping secondary and tertiary education students with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the digital landscape safely. The event was held at Abakaliki High School, the capital of Ebonyi State.
2. Purpose and Outcome: The training sought to raise awareness among students about the detrimental effects of technology-driven crimes, particularly TFSGBV. By empowering young people with information, WRAHP aimed to mitigate the risks and prevent them from becoming victims of such violence.
3. Participants: Approximately 50 students from seven secondary schools across three local government areas in Ebonyi North senatorial district actively participated in the training. Additionally, students from Ebonyi State University were engaged in the program.

Motivation: Dr. Sarah Chima, the Programme Officer for WRAHP in Ebonyi State, underscored the urgent need for such initiatives in light of the alarming increase in sexual and gender-based violence facilitated by information technology. The widespread use of digital platforms has exacerbated this troubling trend, necessitating immediate action.
5. Vulnerable Group: Adolescents and school children are identified as particularly vulnerable to TFSGBV, hence warranting special attention and targeted interventions.

7. Advice to Students: Barr. Faithvin Nwanchor, the State Coordinator of the Gender-based Violence Taskforce in Ebonyi, provided valuable guidance to students during the event. She emphasized the importance of speaking out against sexual and gender-based violence and cautioned against reckless online behavior. Students were educated about the warning signs of TFSGBV, including stalking, sex chatting, and social media account hacking.
