In a bid to enhance educational standards and ensure the safety of students, the Ebonyi State Government has intensified efforts to close down illegal and substandard schools operating within the state. This move comes as a response to the alarming proliferation of such institutions, raising concerns about the quality of education and the well-being of pupils.

Mr. Peter Nwogbaga, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Secondary Education, expressed dismay over the prevalence of these unauthorized schools during an inspection exercise in Ohaukwu Local Government Area. He highlighted the involvement of churches in supporting the establishment of these illegal educational facilities, emphasizing the need for all stakeholders to cease such activities immediately.

Furthermore, Mrs. Ifoma Agwu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Primary Education, condemned the practice of conducting classes under trees and in unapproved environments. She stressed the government's commitment to shutting down any school operating unlawfully within the state, underscoring the importance of providing a conducive and safe learning environment for all students.

The Director of Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Tony Ngwuta, reiterated the government's objective of sanitizing the private school system through rigorous inspections and enforcement of regulations.

During the recent crackdown, several schools, including Shalom Nursery and Primary School, Cathedral Methodist Nursery and Primary School, and Holy Family Nursery and Primary School, were sealed off for operating without proper authorization. Despite claims by some proprietors that they had obtained government approval, the authorities maintain that stringent measures will be taken to ensure compliance with educational standards and regulations.
