Dr. Biodun Saliu, the Deputy Executive Secretary, has reported a series of challenges facing the Nigerian university system during a recent educational summit. The issues range from inadequate funding and infrastructural deficits to staffing shortages and the brain drain syndrome. Dr. Saliu pointed out that poor remuneration and an inability to prioritize curriculum re-engineering are contributing to governance and administrative inefficiencies within the sector.

Furthermore, Dr. Saliu shed light on the poor state of research and development, weak university-industry linkages, and collaborations. He also mentioned the negative impact of undue interference by some professional bodies, an unstable academic calendar, and inadequate access for students. The proliferation of illegal degree-granting institutions, coupled with weak National Universities Commission laws and disregard for its regulations, were also listed as significant concerns.

Despite these daunting challenges, Dr. Saliu remains optimistic, stating that they can be solved. He proposed a multifaceted approach to address these issues, calling for improved funding and the strengthening of the National Universities Commission through legislative means. He emphasized the need for timely curriculum re-engineering, quality assurance reviews, and strategic planning to set clear priorities for the future.

He stated, "There should be improved budgetary allocation and release to public universities and improved subvention for private universities by their owners." He advised private university owners to refrain from viewing their institutions as profit-making ventures for at least the first decade of operation, to foster a more conducive environment for academic excellence and research.
