Nurses Make Fresh Demands Amid Certificate Verification Review

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has nn that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has agreed to revisit the revised guidelines for the verification of certificates by nurses and midwives seeking endorsement from foreign nursing boards/councils.

During the induction program for newly elected state officers of NANNM in Abuja, the National President of NANNM, Michael Ekuma Nnachi, disclosed the outcome of engagements between the association and the NMCN. He stated that the council has committed to reviewing all issues raised by NANNM regarding the revised guidelines.

Mr. Nnachi highlighted some key revisions agreed upon, including the handling of the issuance of letters of good standing by the Head of Nursing Services of respective facilities and the adjustment of the verification period from six months to unspecified duration. Additionally, the application fee remains unchanged, and two years of post-qualification experience are now required post-registration with the Council.

Furthermore, Mr. Nnachi announced that all agreed-upon revised guidelines will be made available on the council portal starting from the first week of March 2024.

Other demands presented by the nurses include the approval of a special separate salary package called Enhanced Nurses Salary Structure (ENSS) to motivate nurses and midwives and reduce migration. They also urged the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure the payment of the 25 percent CONHESS adjustment to nurses and midwives across all tiers of government, effective from June 2023.

Moreover, the nurses requested the objective implementation of government-approved policy replacement circulars by the Chief Medical Directors/Managing Directors to address brain drain syndrome, as well as the approval of an extension of the retirement age of nurses from 60 to 65 years to enhance the available workforce in clinical and educational institutions nationwide.
