Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS) Face Increasing Security Challenges
Once hailed as the most peaceful university in Nigeria, Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS) is now grappling with alarming security challenges that threaten the safety and well-being of its students.
Once hailed as the most peaceful university in Nigeria, Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS) is now grappling with alarming security challenges that threaten the safety and well-being of its students. The university, known for its tranquil atmosphere and academic excellence, is now witnessing unsettling incidents perpetrated by local youths, causing fear and distress among students.
The growing tension reached a tipping point recently when two students were violently attacked by villagers in the Benji area, a popular residence for many students. This incident has left the student community shaken and fearful, raising critical questions about their safety and the university's reputation as a peaceful institution.
Students at UDUS are facing numerous issues, including harassment and theft. Many have reported being attacked or having their phones stolen while walking back from classes. This has severely restricted their freedom to attend classes at any time, forcing them to avoid certain areas or travel in groups for safety. One student lamented, "Why are we not free to be in class or go back from class anytime we want?"

Discrimination has also emerged as a significant concern, particularly when conflicts arise between different ethnic groups. Students from non-Hausa tribes have expressed feelings of marginalization and unfair treatment, exacerbating the already tense atmosphere on campus. "Why the discrimination if an issue occurs between Hausa and other tribes?" asked another concerned student.
The involvement of villagers, especially local youths known as "Yaro," in these incidents has baffled many. UDUS's reputation as a peaceful university is now under scrutiny, with students questioning why the villagers are allowed to create such turmoil. "Why will villagers be the problem while we said our school is the most peaceful?" they ask.
Adding to the frustration is the communication barrier with some of the university security personnel. Many students have found that the security staff they can reach do not understand English, making it difficult to report incidents or seek help. "The weirdest and funniest thing is that most of the school security students can easily reach are not understanding English," a student pointed out, highlighting a significant gap in the security infrastructure.
The recent attack in Benji, where two students were beaten and others chased by villagers, underscores the urgent need for action. Students are pleading with the school authorities to address these security issues promptly. They are calling for increased security measures, better communication with security personnel, and a more inclusive approach to handling disputes on campus.

"We are pleading to the school authorities to take the necessary steps to address these issues happening on the school premises," one student wrote passionately. "This write-up is not just written but due to the disputes that occurred tonight in one of the areas where most of the students reside, which made everyone unsettled and continue to be in fear."
The student community of UDUS is looking to the administration for swift and decisive action to restore the peace and safety for which the university was once renowned. They remain hopeful that with the right measures, UDUS can continue to be the most peaceful university in Nigeria.
