Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) celebrated a historic milestone with the 1st Professional Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony for the pioneer graduates of its Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programme.

The event, held at the University Auditorium, welcomed top officials, professional bodies, parents, and well-wishers to mark the emergence of TAU-trained medical laboratory scientists.
The ceremony opened with a welcome address by Prof. Emenike O. Irokanulo, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, who commended the resilience and diligence of the graduates in reaching this defining stage.
Delivering her remarks, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francisca O. Oladipo described the event as a “historic moment” and a testament to TAU’s commitment to excellence. She highlighted that TAU now ranks 5th among Nigeria’s private universities and 50th nationally, underscoring its rapid growth and dedication to quality education. Prof. Oladipo noted the MLS Department’s full NUC accreditation and emphasized the pioneer graduates’ preparation as globally equipped professionals, strengthened by international partnerships. She also announced TAU’s selection as the first Nigerian institution to pilot the FSI–Mentors Without Borders Tech Mentorship Programme and introduced a new policy requiring all graduates to attain proficiency in at least one of the four United Nations languages through the University’s Foreign Language Centre.
Prof. Oladipo encouraged the inductees to approach each diagnostic task “with precision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to quality,” while acknowledging the contributions of parents, faculty, staff, and the Oko-Irese community.

Lecture of the Day: Navigating AI in Laboratory Medicine
The keynote lecture, “Crossing the Threshold: Navigating the AI Landscape in Laboratory Medicine,” was delivered by Prof. Olubunkola Oluyege, a renowned Professor of Medical Microbiology. She explored the integration of artificial intelligence in laboratory practice, highlighting its transformative impact on efficiency, precision, predictive analytics, and workflow optimization. She addressed ethical concerns such as data privacy and algorithmic bias, urging graduates to embrace continuous learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, emphasizing that “AI may analyze data, but it is your ethical compass that ensures truth in diagnosis.”
Oath-Taking, Licensing, and Induction
The ceremony’s highlight was the formal oath-taking and licensing of the four pioneer graduates, presented by Mr. Okanlawon Sheu, Zonal Coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN). The Vice-Chancellor formally issued professional licenses, recognizing the graduates as modern, globally competent medical laboratory scientists. The inductees were also admitted into the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Kwara State Chapter, by Chairman Dr. Kolawole Ogunwale, who encouraged adherence to professionalism and integrity.
