UNIABUJA Secures ₦4 Billion SHIP Grant to Upgrade Medical and Health Sciences Programmes

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has been selected as one of six Nigerian universities to benefit from the 2026 Special Intervention for Health Professions (SHIP) programme of the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has been selected as one of six Nigerian universities to benefit from the 2026 Special Intervention for Health Professions (SHIP) programme of the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Under the intervention, UNIABUJA will receive ₦4 billion to significantly upgrade its Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing programmes. The funding is expected to drive major improvements in infrastructure, acquisition of modern medical equipment, and expansion of student training capacity across the College of Health Sciences.

The intervention is aimed at strengthening health professions education nationwide and addressing critical gaps in facilities, manpower training, and service delivery within Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Commending the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, praised the College of Health Sciences for successfully securing the competitive grant. He noted that the funding would enhance teaching and research quality while better positioning students for contemporary and technology-driven healthcare practice.

The selection of UNIABUJA for the SHIP programme further underscores the University’s growing profile in medical education, research excellence, and institutional capacity development within Nigeria’s tertiary education landscape.
