UNILAG Farm Empowers Women Through Sustainable Farming Initiatives

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Farm is making significant strides in promoting local capacity for healthy food production while empowering women through sustainable farming practices. Dr. Vide Adedayo, Coordinator of the UNILAG Farm, highlighted this achievement during a visit on October 4, 2024, by the Oworo Reality Women Group, who are currently undergoing training in Home Farming.

The training program, which commenced in August 2024, was facilitated by the NGO Fabulous after an earlier inspection of the farm. Participants engaged in both theoretical sessions and practical hands-on experience, including a one-day classroom course followed by activities on the farm.

"Every produce harvested from the UNILAG Farm is the result of rigorous training," Dr. Adedayo stated, showcasing the women’s efforts. The farm not only provides fresh vegetables but also acts as a vital training ground for students and community members alike, exemplifying the concept of home gardens that allow families to meet their vegetable needs while gaining practical farming skills.

In addition to empowering external participants, the UNILAG Farm plays a crucial role in the academic development of students. Dr. Adedayo, also a lecturer in the Department of Geography, emphasized that students actively participate in farming as part of their curriculum, applying classroom knowledge to real-world agricultural practices. These activities contribute to fulfilling the nutritional needs of both the campus and surrounding communities.

The farm's impact extends beyond crop production. Under the guidance of seasoned facilitators like Father Charles and Mr. Ikechukwu Okon, students and trainees are exposed to a variety of agricultural practices. Notably, Mr. Ojo Ilesanmi, a meteorologist, has introduced innovative pest control methods, utilizing garlic and hot pepper to combat armyworm infestations in maize production.

Since its inception in September 2019, the UNILAG Farm has equipped students in agriculture-related fields with practical knowledge, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of modern agriculture. Its community-focused initiatives, such as the collaboration with the Oworo Reality Women Group, underline the farm's commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security. This commitment builds on the success of past programs, including the 2021 UNILAG Agricultural Conference, where participants were trained to cultivate their own food at home.

The recent harvest included members of the Oworo Reality Women Group, such as Mrs. Bola Ogunbanwo, Mrs. Mariam Oladipupo, and Mrs. Chika Ussen, among others, along with several industrial training students who actively participated in the day's activities.

The harvest featured a variety of crops, including Okra, Jute Leaves (Ewedu), African Spinach (Efo Tete), Lagos Spinach (Efo Soko), Cucumbers, and Water Leaves, marking the successful conclusion of a training program designed to empower participants to grow their own gardens and fulfill their household food needs.

As UNILAG Farm continues to be a hub for agricultural learning, innovation, and community engagement, it remains dedicated to equipping participants with skills that promote sustainability and food self-sufficiency.
