UNILAG, LAMATA Forge Collaboration on Urban Transport and Planning

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Lagos, has opened discussions with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on collaborative initiatives that will strengthen research, policy formulation, and service delivery in Lagos State.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Lagos, has opened discussions with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on collaborative initiatives that will strengthen research, policy formulation, and service delivery in Lagos State.

During a courtesy visit to LAMATA on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Head of Department, Dr. Taofik Salau, led a delegation that included Prof. Wale Alade, Dr. Abubakar Olaseni, Dr. Victor Onifade, and Miss Damilola Odekunle. The team highlighted areas of mutual interest where academic expertise could complement transport management strategies, particularly in tackling the challenges of a rapidly growing city like Lagos.

The delegation commended LAMATA’s efforts to create a safer commuting environment through its adoption of the SHECAN Tool, a framework designed to help commuters, transport workers, and regulators prevent and respond to sexual harassment in public transport systems. They also applauded the appointment of LAMATA’s Managing Director, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, as Chair of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Africa Division for 2025–2027, noting that the recognition places Lagos on the continental map of transport leadership.

Engr. Akinajo welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed LAMATA’s commitment to building partnerships with academic institutions, stressing that collaboration with the University of Lagos would not only enhance urban transport research but also translate into innovative, people-centered solutions for residents.

The visit reinforces UNILAG’s broader drive to strengthen Town-Gown partnerships that ensure research outcomes from the University directly address pressing urban challenges while contributing to sustainable development in Lagos and beyond.
