UNILORIN Dismisses Induction Delay Rumours, Assures 44 Medical Graduands of Imminent Swearing-In

The management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has debunked reports alleging that 44 medical graduands would be forced to wait until 2026 for their professional induction, describing the claims as misleading and unfounded.

In a statement issued on February 16, 2026, and signed by the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, the University clarified that viral posts on X suggesting that the affected graduands would be merged with the next batch are inaccurate.

Speaking on behalf of the management, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Biodun Suleiman Alabi, explained that 194 students sat for the final MB, BS examinations last year, with 175 passing outright and 19 recording resits. However, due to the induction quota approved by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), only 150 candidates could be inducted in November.

According to Prof. Alabi, the MDCN directed the University to rank successful candidates, resulting in the top 150 being inducted, while the remaining 25 successful candidates and the 19 who had resits were deferred. He noted that although the Federal Government announced plans to double medical admission quotas nationwide, implementation has yet to take effect.

He further disclosed that the University has maintained active engagement with the MDCN to secure induction slots for the remaining 44 graduands.

The Vice Chancellor, Wahab Egbewole, SAN, has also directed the initiation of steps toward reaccreditation of the Medicine and Surgery programme. The move is aimed at increasing the current induction quota beyond 150 to align with the institution’s training capacity.

UNILORIN management urged parents and students to remain calm, assuring them that advocacy efforts are ongoing and that arrangements are being finalized to ensure the affected graduands are inducted without unnecessary delay.
