UNIOSUN Workers Accuse Governor Adeleke of Intimidation Over Welfare Demands

Workers at Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of issuing threats in response to their demands for better welfare and working conditions. The accusations were raised by members of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), all under the Joint Action Committee (JAC).

In a statement released on Wednesday, the workers affirmed their determination to continue advocating for their rights, despite what they interpreted as intimidation from Governor Adeleke during the university's recent convocation ceremony.

"We appreciate Governor Adeleke for his worker-friendly policies, especially for the UNIOSUN workforce," said JAC chairman Kunmi Dada. "However, we are concerned by his remarks at the 14th Convocation, which we view as threats against our legitimate demands for improved welfare and working conditions."

The workers emphasized their commitment to maintaining the university's high educational standards, despite the challenges posed by the multi-campus system and economic hardships in the country. They argued that their welfare demands were reasonable and necessary for delivering quality services.

"We reject any form of intimidation or coercion and stand firm in our advocacy for fair treatment, better working conditions, and adequate compensation," the workers stated. They also called on Governor Adeleke to engage in meaningful discussions with university representatives, noting that dialogue is essential for resolving disputes.

Governor Adeleke has since reaffirmed his respect for the contributions of UNIOSUN workers to the development of the institution, though tensions remain between the workers and the state government over unresolved welfare concerns.
