The University of Ibadan (UI) has commenced a workshop aimed at equipping early-career academic and non-academic staff with digital skills, cybersecurity knowledge, emerging technologies, and data analysis competencies.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has commenced a workshop aimed at equipping early-career academic and non-academic staff with digital skills, cybersecurity knowledge, emerging technologies, and data analysis competencies.

The five-day programme, organized by the MacArthur Foundation Grant Liaison Office in partnership with the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), is part of a strategic effort to enhance the university’s human and institutional capacity.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Peter O. Olapegba, FNPA, fspsp, speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, described the training as a critical investment in UI’s future. He highlighted that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is reshaping academia, research, administration, and global competitiveness, stressing the importance of equipping the workforce to lead in this evolving digital era.

Professor Olapegba emphasized that early-career researchers are the intellectual engine and future professoriate of the university, noting that proficiency in advanced data analysis using tools such as SPSS and Power BI is crucial for impactful research. He also acknowledged the role of non-academic staff as the backbone of the institution, stating that administrative efficiency, data security, and seamless service delivery depend on their digital competence.

The DVC commended the MacArthur Foundation Grant Liaison Office for its support, which aligns with the university’s strategic objectives. Mrs. Stella Soola, Senior Deputy Registrar and member of the Local Organizing Committee, disclosed that the training is in its third edition and highlighted noticeable improvements in previous participants’ performance, urging attendees to maximize the opportunity.

In a welcome address, Professor Rotimi A. Oderinde, MacArthur Foundation Grant Liaison Officer, stressed the need for participants to stay updated on emerging technologies and assured that the Foundation, in collaboration with DBI, is committed to enhancing technological capacity for effective service delivery. Mr. Emeka Nzeih, Head of Learning and Development at DBI, stated that non-teaching staff would receive training in digital skills, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, while early researchers would focus on data analysis using SPSS and Power BI. Internal assessments have been established to monitor learning outcomes.

Goodwill messages were received from the Bursar, University Librarian, Director of Audit, Director of UI Information Technology and Media Services, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, and Professor S. G. Jonathan, member of the University Governing Council.

A total of 55 academic staff and 45 non-academic staff are participating in the workshop.
