Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Crucial for Development, Says FULafia Lecturer Prof. Zara

Professor Zara Emmanuel Kwaghe, a professor of social history at Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), has emphasized that empowering women and advancing gender equality are essential for development.

She made this statement while delivering the 14th inaugural lecture of FULafia, titled "Herstory in the Making of Modern Nigeria: Patriarchy, Women, and the Politics of Knowledge Production."

Prof. Zara, a senior lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies, asserted that throughout history, women have played a central role in ensuring the stability, progress, and long-term development of nations. She stressed that in the 21st century, achieving gender balance and providing equal opportunities for women to reach their full potential is crucial.

While acknowledging progress made in overcoming challenges faced by women, Prof. Zara argued that more needs to be done to ensure women's representation in decision-making processes. She emphasized the importance of providing quality education to girls and women, promoting gender-sensitive policies, and addressing violence against women. She urged governments to implement strategies to address cultural, societal, and systemic barriers limiting women's success.

The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, congratulated Prof. Zara on her achievement, noting that she is the first female to present an inaugural lecture in social history at the university. Prof. Josephine Odey, Chairperson of the Inaugural Lecture Committee, commended Prof. Zara for her contributions to knowledge, which have added value to women's lives in Nigeria and beyond.

The occasion concluded with the presentation of a certificate, plaque, and gift to Prof. Zara by the Vice-Chancellor.
