AKSU Alumni Commend Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akpan, Pledge Continued Partnership

The Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Alumni Association has commended the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. OtoAbasi Akpan, for his leadership performance and visionary drive since assuming office.

The Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Alumni Association has commended the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. OtoAbasi Akpan, for his leadership performance and visionary drive since assuming office.

The commendation was given during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Council of the AKSU Alumni Association to the Acting Vice-Chancellor on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the University’s Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Akpan expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for the opportunity to serve as Acting Vice-Chancellor and for his sustained support to the University. He noted that the progress recorded by the institution was largely made possible through the Governor’s backing.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor disclosed that when he assumed office in August 2025, the University operated with eight faculties and 43 academic programmes. He stated that within five months, AKSU secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for four additional faculties offering 43 programmes, adding that plans were underway to establish two more faculties before the end of February 2026.

Prof. Akpan commended the Alumni Association for serving as worthy ambassadors of the University and upholding its core values in their professional endeavours. He also praised the Association for the near-completion of an Entrepreneurship Centre designed to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance, while encouraging sustained mentorship and professional networking to further support the University’s growth.

Speaking on behalf of the Alumni Association, the National President, Engr. Uwakmfon Michael, applauded Prof. Akpan for facilitating the long-awaited Convocation Ceremony, which had been delayed for over seven years. He described the Acting Vice-Chancellor’s achievements as outstanding and expressed admiration for the pace of infrastructural and academic development across the campus.

Engr. Uwakmfon also acknowledged Prof. Akpan’s role in stabilising the Alumni Association after serving as Chairman of its Electoral Board in 2024 and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to partnering with University Management to advance institutional development.

In a vote of thanks, the National Vice President of the Alumni Association, Comrade Edianabong Benson, praised the University Management for prioritising students’ welfare and demonstrating strong commitment to the growth of the institution.

The visit culminated in the presentation of an Award of Excellent Service and Outstanding Leadership in University Development to the Acting Vice-Chancellor. Also present at the meeting were the Head of Administration, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Seun Lawal, other senior administrative staff, and members of the National Executive Council of the Alumni Association.
