The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to foster democratic culture and activities that will boost the Nigerian economy. 

In a statement marking the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, titled "Twenty-Five Years of Democratic Era in Nigeria's Fourth Republic: The Experience of the University System," ASUU Chairman Professor Ayo Akinwole expressed disappointment that Nigerians have yet to enjoy the benefits of democracy. He noted that many challenges from the military era remain prevalent.

Professor Akinwole emphasized the need for President Tinubu to ensure Nigerian children receive a functional, world-class education system, stressing that many still study under inadequate conditions. He highlighted the lack of basic social amenities, such as stable power supply and effective healthcare, and the continued neglect of the education sector.

He criticized the frequent establishment of new universities without proper funding, urging the government to focus on adequately funding existing institutions. Akinwole pointed out that most Nigerian students attend public universities, which are underfunded and suffer from infrastructural deficits.

ASUU called on President Tinubu to prioritize the development of universities capable of addressing national challenges and competing globally. The union urged the government to refrain from further proliferation of universities and to support existing ones to provide quality education.
