BUK Partners with Chinese Firm to Revolutionise Hybrid Rice and Mechanised Farming

Bayero University, Kano (BUK), is set to formalise a strategic partnership with Green Way Agrotech Limited to introduce high-yield hybrid rice varieties and advanced mechanisation techniques to Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The collaboration, discussed during a high-level visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, on April 3, 2026, aims to tackle national food scarcity by scaling the production of rice, maize, and groundnuts through modern technology.

The Managing Director of Green Way Agrotech, Peter Fonk, outlined a visionary roadmap to transition Nigeria toward agricultural self-sufficiency within five years, with a long-term goal of establishing the nation as a global export hub.

In his response, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Musa described the initiative as "timely and highly relevant," noting its alignment with the university’s mission to enhance value addition in the agricultural sector. He reaffirmed BUK’s readiness to provide the academic and research infrastructure—particularly through the Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA)—to ensure the partnership’s success.

The meeting, attended by top university officials including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Registrar, concluded with a technical tour of the CDA to identify specific areas for immediate implementation.
