BUK Pledges Support as Pharmaceutical Society Plans 2025 International Conference in Kano

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has announced plans to hold its 2025 International Conference in Kano, with Bayero University, Kano (BUK) pledging its full support for the event.

This was revealed during a courtesy visit by the PSN delegation to the Vice Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, in his office. The delegation was led by the National President of PSN, Pharmacist Ayyuba Tanko, alongside the Kano State

 

made history as the only Nigerian Vice Chancellor to graduate two sets of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students and had recently overseen the commissioning of a new building for the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The delegation solicited the university's support in providing facilities for the upcoming conference, scheduled for November 2025. "Our conference typically hosts between 3,000 to 5,000 delegates from across the country and the diaspora, including participants from the U.S. and other nations," said Pharmacist Umar. The society requested access to key university facilities such as the Convocation Arena and the soon-to-be-launched university hotel to accommodate attendees.

 

National President Ayyuba Tanko emphasized the significant economic benefits that Kano would gain from hosting the conference. "Hotels, food vendors, and other service providers will benefit tremendously," he remarked. Tanko also highlighted Kano's contributions to the pharmaceutical profession, noting that the state has produced two national PSN presidents.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 22, 2025, in the Vice Chancellor's Committee Room, the PSN President outlined the society's long-standing history and upcoming activities. Pharmacist Umar described PSN as the oldest professional association in Nigeria, established in 1927, and stated that it is currently in "Centenary Mode" as it approaches its 100-year milestone. He informed Professor Abbas of the society's decision to host its prestigious international conference in Kano, marking the first time since 1998 that the state would host the event.

In response, Professor Abbas assured the delegation of BUK's full support for the event, pledging to provide facilities capable of accommodating more than the anticipated number of participants. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the conference's success and strengthening the university's collaboration with the pharmacy profession.

 

The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the university's recent achievements, including a N250 million facility commissioned by the Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf. Additionally, he reiterated BUK's commitment to initiating drug production in collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy.
