The Western Delta University, Oghara Delta State, has unveiled plans to establish an institute of Korean studies within the institution.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe, highlighted the university's commitment to fostering collaborations in education, research, and cultural exchange with South Korea. The initiative aims to promote cultural understanding and awareness.

Prof. Ikelegbe emphasized the significance of the doctoral degree as the highest honor conferred by universities, distinguishing between academic and honorary degrees. He elaborated on the rigorous selection process undertaken by the university's Honorary Degree Research Committee, Senate, and Governing Council in identifying individuals worthy of receiving honorary degrees.

The announcement coincided with the conferment of an Honorary Doctorate degree on the South Korea Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Kim Young-Chae, at the Embassy of Korea in Maitama Abuja. Prof. Ikelegbe commended Ambassador Kim's distinguished contributions and service to society, underscoring the meticulous evaluation process undertaken by the university to bestow honorary degrees.
