In response to the alarming rate of maternal deaths and unsafe abortions in Nigeria, health experts have advised the federal government to introduce abortion-related topics into the secondary school curriculum. This recommendation aims to educate students about the risks associated with unsafe abortions.

According to the October 2021 Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) abortion survey, approximately 4.6% of reproductive-aged women in Nigeria undergo abortions annually, amounting to nearly 2 million procedures. The survey highlighted that a significant proportion of women who seek abortions are educated, urban residents, and mothers.

During a webinar on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) organized by the Media Health and Rights Initiative of Nigeria, public health specialist Rita Asoloko emphasized the urgency of educating secondary school students on the dangers of unsafe abortion. She expressed concern over reports of young females resorting to hazardous methods, such as using hangers and chemical concoctions, to terminate pregnancies.

Dr. Kingsley Odogwu, Director of Clinical Services at Marie Stopes International (MSI), stressed the importance of women’s rights to education and healthcare. He underscored that informed decision-making is crucial to safeguarding women’s health and preventing life-threatening complications from unsafe abortions.
