The Faculty of Sciences at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has conducted an intensive in-house training workshop to familiarize its academic staff with the institution’s unique examination protocols. The event took place on Monday, December 2, 2024, at NOUN’s headquarters in Abuja.

The workshop, tailored to address the needs of both new and experienced faculty members, aimed to enhance their understanding of NOUN’s distinct operational standards, particularly in examination and marking practices.

Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Kolawole Lawal, emphasized the necessity of the workshop, especially with the influx of staff transitioning from traditional universities.

“This training is crucial because many of our new colleagues are unfamiliar with NOUN’s distinctive operations. Unlike conventional institutions, our processes are unique, and this orientation ensures that they are equipped to perform efficiently,” Prof. Lawal stated.

He further highlighted the workshop’s timing, noting its importance in preparing the faculty for the upcoming examination and marking activities.

The keynote presentation, delivered by former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Technology, Innovation, and Research), Prof. Monioluwa Olaniyi, focused on fostering academic culture and aligning staff with NOUN’s academic standards.

“Academic culture provides a framework for our teaching, research, and administrative processes. It ensures that we maintain international standards while tailoring them to our unique institutional context,” Prof. Olaniyi remarked.

She urged participants to familiarize themselves with the National Open University of Nigeria Act and other governing documents, stressing the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in an evolving educational landscape.

Participants also voiced concerns regarding potential conflicts between institutional guidelines and national laws, especially in examination-related decisions. Addressing these concerns, Prof. Olaniyi advised close collaboration with the university’s legal unit and adherence to established procedures.

“If confusion arises, it is essential to consult the legal unit or escalate matters to the Senate through proper channels,” she advised, reaffirming the importance of aligning university statutes with national legal frameworks.

The workshop served as a platform for discussions on enhancing examination conduct and maintaining the university’s standards of excellence, reinforcing NOUN’s commitment to innovative and effective academic practices.
