Federal Character Commission (FCC), Nigeria scores Lagos State University (LASU) high, says staff composition adequately reflects principle of Federal Character.
The Federal Commissioner representing Lagos State on the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Abdulwasiu Kayode Bawa-Allah has commended the Lagos State University for adequately reflecting federal character in the composition of its staff members. Hon. Bawa-Allah , while leading officials of the Commission on a courtesy/sensitization visit to the University Management also assured the university of the Commission's support whenever the need arises.
Hon. Bawa-Allah said, "We are here to enlighten the leadership of the university on the federal character principle. You have a mandate to submit your nominal roll to the commission, which you have done. We have analysed your staff composition and concluded that you have done very well in terms of representation of indigenes in the employment of both your academic and non-academic staff. All the 20 local governments of Lagos State are represented in your personnel and even non-indigenes are adequately represented."
He insisted that the need to ensure that there is no tension in government agencies at both the state and local government levels arising from lopsided appointment of staff compelled the Commission to embark on sensitization visits to relevant agencies, and encouraged the University to continue to give consideration to the federal character principle in the employment of workers in future.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello , mni, NPOM, in her response, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner and his team for the sensitization visit. She averred that the university's scorecard was a reflection of the deliberate consideration given to federal character in the recruitment processes of the university.
The Vice Chancellor, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, further assured that the same consideration is given to the admission process, which ensures that indigenes from all local governments of the state and qualified non-indigenes also get admission. The VC's claims were corroborated by members of the University Management who were present at the meeting.
The visitors were eventually joined by a Member of the Federal House of Representatives, representing Badagry Constituency, Hon. Oluwaseun Sesi Whingan, who thanked the university for the sizeable number of the Badagry indigenes in the university while advocating that the interest of indigenes of the State must continue to be protected when it comes to employment.
Hon. Whingan also opened his door for productive partnership between his office and the university to ensure unprecedented benefits for both students and workers of Lagos origin.
The meeting took place at the Vice Chancellor's Conference Room, Senate Building, main campus, Ojo.
