Federal Government Launches Digital Literacy Initiative in Niger State

 On September 15, 2024, the Federal Government inaugurated a significant digital literacy initiative in Niger State’s capital, Minna. This program, sponsored by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), aims to advance digital skills across the region.

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago spearheaded the launch, expressing strong support for the initiative. Governor Bago highlighted the essential role of digital literacy in modern society and pledged the state government's commitment to surpassing the federal target of 70% digital inclusion by 2027.

In his address, the Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, emphasized that the "Digital Literacy for All" program is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's broader strategy to enhance Nigerian lives through technological advancements. Olawande encouraged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to engage with the initiative, underscoring President Tinubu’s dedication to improving governance accessibility.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, outlined the initiative’s framework, which was established following President Tinubu’s directive to boost Nigeria’s economy through technology in key areas such as agriculture, education, and healthcare. The initiative targets digital inclusion for 70% of Nigerians by 2027, focusing on information and data literacy, content creation for businesses, online safety, and problem-solving skills.

A critical component of the program involves training 80 Corps members per state, each responsible for retraining 600 individuals monthly throughout the initiative’s duration. This approach aims to maximize the program’s reach and impact.

Engr. Faruk Yabo, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, described the flag-off as a pivotal step toward a digitally empowered society. He noted the initiative’s potential to foster technological innovation and productivity in essential sectors.

Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, Director-General of the NYSC, expressed appreciation for the collaboration with NITDA and affirmed NYSC’s dedication to the program’s success. He highlighted the opportunity for Corps Members to further contribute to national development.

Additionally, Alhaji Suleiman Isah, the State Commissioner for Digital Economy, reported that the digital literacy curriculum had already been implemented in Chanchaga local government area, training 2,000 market participants. Isah also advocated for the establishment of a National Centre for Agro-tech in Niger State to support its agrarian economy.

This initiative represents a crucial step in Nigeria’s digital transformation, aiming to enhance technological skills and inclusivity across the country.
