Federal University of Technology Akure Inducts First Graduating Students of School of Computing into CPRCN

Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has inducted 176 first graduating students of its School of Computing into the Computing Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPRCN), officially making them members of the professional regulatory body.

The induction ceremony, attended by parents and dignitaries, marked a historic milestone for the university and the graduates.

The Registrar of CPRCN, represented by Mr. Akinyemi Komolafe, administered the oath of induction, emphasizing the need for graduates to uphold ethical standards and avoid actions that could bring disrepute to the Council.

Delivering the lecture titled “Navigating the Digital Divide: A Critical Look at Professional Accountability for Emerging Tools”, Professor Adekunle Eledire, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), advised the inductees to view graduation not as an endpoint, but as the beginning of continuous learning. He highlighted three critical challenges in computing careers: the velocity of obsolescence, the lure of transient hype cycles, and the ethical responsibility of professionals.

Professor Eledire stressed that graduates must focus on mastering core principles—algorithms, data structures, systems design—rather than chasing the latest tools or frameworks. He warned against confusing tools with principles and emphasized that a world-class engineer is defined by understanding fundamental problems and maintaining integrity in technology deployment.

On the ethical dimension, he urged graduates to continuously challenge the efficiency, impact, and moral implications of their work, noting that professional reputation depends more on integrity than on technical mastery alone.

In her opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji commended the School of Computing for its contributions to FUTA and national development. She recognized the Dean, Professor Kayode Alese, and faculty for their dedication to nurturing talent and applauded the graduands for being the first cohort to benefit from this professional induction, describing it as a privilege delivered “on a platter of gold.”

Professor Kayode Alese, Dean of the School of Computing, encouraged the graduates to serve as ambassadors of excellence, use technology ethically, and contribute to national development through innovation. He highlighted the dynamism of the computing field, including AI, cybersecurity, big data, cloud computing, and digital transformation, urging graduates to continue learning, adapting, and leading in the evolving digital landscape.

The ceremony also celebrated academic excellence. Two top graduating students, Gabriel Enegbenose (Information Systems) and Onyema Ebere (Software Engineering), both with a CGPA of 4.86, shared reflections on resilience and continuous learning. Other top students included Awanebi Nathan (Information Technology, 4.82), Adekunle Ayomide (Computer Science, 4.77), and Ayoola Oluwadurotimi (Cyber Security, 4.61).

The event featured the presentation of induction certificates and was witnessed by two founding members of the School of Computing, Professor Emeritus S.O. Falaki and retired Professor O.C. Akinyoku, whom Professor Alese described as mentors instrumental in shaping the school’s current leadership.

The ceremony underscored FUTA’s commitment to producing globally relevant computing professionals equipped with technical skills, ethical grounding, and a vision for national and international impact.
