The Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has taken a historic step in recognizing the contributions of distinguished Nigerians to education by naming 43 buildings and facilities in their honour.

The initiative celebrates past Vice Chancellors, Nigerian leaders, educationists, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists who have significantly impacted the country’s educational sector. Among the honourees are former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, FUOYE’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor Professor Chinedu Nebo, renowned historian Professor J. F. Ade Ajayi, and business magnate Chief Folorunso Alakija.

Speaking on the development, Professor Fasina emphasized that the recognition is aimed at celebrating the substantial contributions of these individuals while inspiring the university community to pursue excellence. He reaffirmed FUOYE’s commitment to academic distinction and continuous acknowledgment of those who have played pivotal roles in advancing education in Nigeria.

Some of the newly named buildings and facilities include the University Main Library, now called Havillah Library, and the College of Medical Sciences, named after Olikoye Ransome Kuti. The Faculty of Agriculture bears the name of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, while the Faculty of Science is dedicated to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. The Theatre and Media Arts Auditorium is now known as Wole Soyinka Auditorium, and the Faculty of Pharmacy has been named after the late Professor Dora Akunyili.

Key roadways within the university have also been named after influential figures, including the John Kayode Fayemi (JKF) Way, Senator Ayo Arise Way, and Prof. Nebo Drive, among others. Additionally, the university’s Sports Arena has been named the Michael Oparaji Sports Complex, while the FUOYE Business School is now known as Wole Olanipekun Business School.

The university’s Director of Advancement Center, Professor Bukola Oyawoye, had earlier hinted at this initiative during the commissioning of the Fasina Conference Center. The naming of these buildings and facilities serves as a lasting tribute to the honourees’ legacies and is expected to inspire students and staff to contribute meaningfully to society.
