The International Award for Young People Nigeria has significantly enhanced the educational landscape in Lagos by distributing 85 laptops and MTN MiFi devices to principals of public schools. This initiative was part of the New Award Leaders Training, which aimed to equip educators with the necessary skills to guide and support students throughout their participation in the Award framework.
The distribution took place across multiple locations from September 17 to September 20, with the presentations held at the Award office in Lekki for Education District III, Lagos City College for Education Districts II and IV, Government Senior College in Agege for Education Districts I and VI, and Awori Ajeromi Senior Grammar School for Education District V.
In total, 140 teachers were trained and certified as Award Leaders across six education districts. The laptops and MiFi devices were allocated to 85 principals from various schools: 20 from Education District I, 14 from Education District II, 12 from Education Districts III and IV each, 16 from Education District V, and 11 from Education District VI.
These resources will empower students to engage with the Award framework by allowing them to update their progress online via the Online Record Book—a platform that facilitates activity recording and mentoring.
Feedback from school principals highlighted the initiative's positive impact. Mrs. Oluronke Oluwu, Principal of Ayedere Ajibola Senior High School in Education District II, expressed gratitude, stating, “The provision of these laptops and MiFi devices will significantly enhance our students’ ability to engage with the Award framework.”
Participants of the training also shared their enthusiasm. Mrs. Idowu Florence, an Award Leader from Mende Senior High School, remarked, “This training has not only equipped us with knowledge but also provided tools that will transform how we implement the Award framework in our schools.”
Oshoke J. Bello, National Director of the International Award for Young People Nigeria, emphasized the initiative's significance, saying, “Providing these resources is a crucial step towards fostering seamless participation and engagement of Award Participants. We are committed to supporting schools to ensure that young people have what they need to succeed.”
The International Award for Young People Nigeria is part of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program, offering a global framework for non-formal education and learning. According to Communications Officer Temilade Esther, the Award encourages young people to pursue their dreams, celebrate achievements, and make a difference in their communities.
This initiative not only aims to develop transferable skills among participants but also fosters a sense of adventure and community involvement. The International Award for Young People Nigeria is dedicated to helping young Nigerians discover their potential, regardless of their background or challenges.
