Kaduna State University Researchers Win Awards for Drug Detection Sensor
The awards were presented at the iSAMN 2024 conference, hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with Malaysia’s National Nanotechnology Centre.
Two researchers from Kaduna State University’s Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Dr. Hauwa Mohammed Mustafa and Salamatu Hayatu, have won Gold and Bronze awards for developing a paper electrode sensor for detecting Codeine and Tramadol. The awards were presented at the iSAMN 2024 conference, hosted by Universiti Putra Malaysia in collaboration with Malaysia’s National Nanotechnology Centre.
The sensor utilizes gold nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped graphene, providing a colorimetric response that changes color based on drug concentration and uses electrochemical techniques for low-concentration detection. Testing on urine samples confirmed the sensor’s effectiveness in identifying drug misuse.
Kaduna State University’s Director of University Advancement, Alhaji Usman Tabari, awarded N200,000 and N100,000 to the researchers in recognition of their achievement, noting the device’s potential for field application and commercialization.
