The Centre for Water and Environmental Development (CWED) at Kaduna State University (KASU) organized a tree planting campaign to promote sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The event, held in the GIS Lab on the university’s main campus, involved first-year Geography students and was part of a broader advocacy program on climate change and sustainability.
Lydia Saleh, CWED team lead, articulated the organization’s goals, highlighting the importance of sustainable management of water and environmental resources in both rural and urban contexts. The initiative aimed to provide students with hands-on experience and emphasize the benefits of tree planting as a key element in environmental conservation.

Dr. Aliyu Jaafar Abubakar, the Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Sustainability Studies and Chairman of Green KASU, represented the Vice-Chancellor at the event. In his opening remarks, Dr. Abubakar stressed that sustainability is a universal responsibility that transcends all academic disciplines. He called for collective action, particularly from the younger generation, to advance sustainability goals.
Dr. Bonet Rikici Atiyong, Head of the Department of Geography and Sustainability Studies, encouraged students to actively engage with the content of the event and apply the knowledge gained in practical settings.

A lecture delivered by Dr. Joseph Ariko David, through Mal. Babati Abuhanifa from the Department of Geography and Sustainability Studies, underscored the urgency of combating deforestation, land degradation, and erosion. The lecture emphasized the critical need for collective action in tree planting to mitigate these environmental challenges.
Following the lecture, both staff and students participated in planting trees around the university campus, fostering afforestation and contributing to the university’s environmental sustainability efforts.
The campaign was well-received by all participants, marking a significant step towards enhancing environmental awareness and responsibility among the university community.
