Students from Lagos State University (LASU) swept the top positions in the LASEPA essay competition, held to mark World Environmental Day 2024.

Lagos State University (LASU) students have achieved a remarkable feat by sweeping all top positions at the prestigious Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) essay competition. The event, held on June 20, 2024, at the LASEPA Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, was organized to commemorate World Environmental Day and focused on the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience."

The competition saw a robust participation of 174 undergraduate students from various tertiary institutions across Lagos State, all debating the challenges and innovative solutions regarding land restoration and environmental sustainability. LASU stood out with an impressive 73 entries, the highest from any institution, and secured nine spots in the top 20 finalists.

Demonstrating academic excellence and a deep understanding of environmental issues, four LASU students clinched the top four positions:

  1. Sowemimo Efunjola Olumayowa (Medicine & Surgery) - 1st Place
  2. Bieni Precious Chinomso (History & International Relations) - 2nd Place
  3. Hamzat Kabir Olorunwa (Physiology) - 3rd Place
  4. Adebiyi Omotola Elizabeth (Mechanical Engineering) - 4th Place

The winners were rewarded generously for their exceptional essays. The first-place winner, Sowemimo Efunjola Olumayowa, received a cash prize of N500,000, an award, and was named a LASEPA Ambassador for 2024. The second-place winner, Bieni Precious Chinomso, was awarded N300,000, an award, and a LASEPA Ambassador status. The third-place prize of N200,000, an award, and an ambassador status went to Hamzat Kabir Olorunwa, while the fourth-place winner, Adebiyi Omotola Elizabeth, received N100,000, an award, and the ambassador status.

The grand finale was graced by Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, the Acting Dean of the Students Affairs Division, who led the students, and Prof. Oseni Afisi, the Director of the Directorate of Special Interventions, who coordinated LASU's participation in the competition.

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, extended her heartfelt congratulations to the students, applauding their hard work and dedication. She emphasized the university's commitment to supporting students in future competitions and encouraged them to continue excelling and upholding the university's prestigious reputation.
