Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, has commemorated the 2026 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Ceremony as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and climate action.

The event, held on July 14, 2026, at the frontage of the Oluremi Tinubu Hall on the University's Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus, was themed "Tree for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility." It brought together members of the University community and other stakeholders committed to environmental conservation.
Speaking at the ceremony through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Daodu Morufu Adedayo, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, described environmental protection as a shared responsibility. She noted that trees play a vital role in combating climate change by absorbing carbon emissions, reducing urban heat, purifying the air and preserving biodiversity.
She said LASUED, as a leading institution of education, remains committed to promoting environmental advocacy by using education to cultivate a culture of tree planting among students. According to her, the University is raising environmentally conscious graduates whose impact will extend beyond the campus into communities and workplaces.
The Vice-Chancellor also commended the University's Ceremony Committee for its commitment to the successful organisation of the programme.

She emphasised that tree planting should not be viewed as a ceremonial exercise alone but as a long-term commitment that requires continuous care. She urged participants to nurture and protect the newly planted trees, stressing that sustained maintenance would ensure they become lasting symbols of environmental stewardship.
Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye further encouraged members of the University community to regard every available space as an opportunity to restore the environment and safeguard the future for generations to come.
Delivering a presentation at the event, a final-year Microbiology student, Fidelis Juliet Alice, described tree planting as both a technical responsibility and a lasting legacy. She highlighted the importance of selecting tree species suited to local environmental conditions, proper planting techniques, careful handling of roots, adequate watering, mulching and minimal staking to ensure healthy growth.
She also stressed that continuous care during the first two years after planting is critical to the survival of young trees, describing every tree planted as a lasting commitment to environmental responsibility and future generations.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic planting of trees by the University's principal officers, reaffirming LASUED's commitment to environmental sustainability and collective action.
