Meet Prof. Olanbiwoninu, the first female ACU DVC Academics

The Governing Council of Ajayi Crowther University has appointed Professor Afolake Atinuke Olanbiwoninu of the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics). The appointment was finalised at an emergency council meeting held on March 16, 2026.

Her appointment marks a notable milestone in the Ajayi Crowther University history, being the first female Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic of the institution, which also points to her influence in academia.

Professor Afolake Atinuke Olanbiwoninu, a leading expert in food microbiology, is making significant contributions to food safety and nutrition research while serving in a top academic leadership role at Ajayi Crowther University.

Professor Olanbiwoninu currently works as a lecturer and researcher at the institution. She began her academic journey at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in 1995, graduating as the best student in her class. She later moved to the University of Ibadan, obtaining a Master’s degree in 2008 and a Ph.D. in 2014.

Her research covers several critical areas, including food microbiology, microbial enrichment of fermented foods with essential micronutrients, food safety, microbial ecology, and antimicrobial resistance.

Over the years, her work has helped deepen scientific understanding of how beneficial microorganisms can be used to enhance the nutritional value of traditional African fermented foods.

Her research integrates biotechnology, nutrition, and public health to promote microbial innovations that support food security across Africa.
