Mekelle University Bolsters Transition to Autonomy at High-Level Policy Workshop
A high-level delegation from Mekelle University (MU), led by President Dr. Fana Hagos, is currently participating in a decisive five-day Policy Document Review Workshop aimed at accelerating the institution's transition to an autonomous status.
The workshop, organized by the U.S. Embassy in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ethiopian Academy of Science, serves as a critical platform for refining the regulatory frameworks that will govern the university’s future.
The discussions are centered on four pivotal policy pillars essential for institutional independence:
Student Admission: Establishing merit-based and transparent entry criteria.
Resource Mobilization: Diversifying revenue streams to ensure financial sustainability.
Alumni Engagement: Building robust networks to support institutional growth and mentorship.
Endowment Policy: Creating long-term investment strategies to secure the university's fiscal future.
This strategic participation underscores Mekelle University’s proactive approach to achieving policy excellence and global competence. By aligning its internal governance with international standards, MU is positioning itself to lead as an autonomous entity within the Ethiopian higher education landscape in 2026.
Dr. Fana Hagos emphasized that these reforms are vital for the university to foster innovation and maintain academic rigor while gaining the flexibility needed to address modern educational challenges.
The outcome of this workshop is expected to provide a finalized roadmap for MU's operational autonomy, setting a benchmark for other Ethiopian universities undergoing similar transitions.
