Nigeria Becomes World’s Third-Largest Source of International Students — UNESCO Report

Nigeria has emerged as the world’s third-largest source of international students, accounting for five per cent of global outbound student mobility in 2023, according to UNESCO’s Higher Education Global Trends Report. China and India ranked first and second, contributing 37 per cent and 29 per cent respectively, while Nigeria tied with Germany at five per cent. Other countries in the top 10 include Viet Nam, Uzbekistan, the United States, France, Pakistan, and Nepal. UNESCO revealed that international student mobility has grown significantly over the past two decades, rising from 2.5 million students in 2002 to 7.3 million in 2023, with projections reaching nine million by 2030. Despite this growth, the organization noted that less than three per cent of higher education students globally have access to study-abroad opportunities, describing international education as largely elitist.

 Global Student Mobility Continues to Rise Despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, UNESCO said international student mobility has continued to grow steadily.

“International student mobility has become a topic of growing importance in the field of higher education, with mobility flows increasing around the world, leading to unprecedented levels of global exchange,” the report stated.

The organization revealed that the number of internationally mobile students nearly tripled over the last two decades — rising from 2.5 million in 2002 to 7.3 million in 2023.

UNESCO also projected that the number could climb to nine million by 2030.

While the growth in global student mobility is significant, UNESCO stressed that access to international education remains limited.

According to the report, less than three per cent of higher education students worldwide currently benefit from academic mobility opportunities.

The organization described international education as largely elitist, arguing that studying abroad is still accessible mainly to a privileged minority.

“Despite growth expectations, the proportion of higher education students benefiting from academic mobility remains low, just under 3%, underscoring the elitist nature of mobility as still only a privileged few individuals gain access to higher education opportunities abroad,” UNESCO stated.

The reason Why More Students Are Studying Abroad include;

- Economic conditions

-Quality and capacity of local universities

- Government education policies

-Visa regulations

-Availability of post-graduation work opportunities

UNESCO also revealed that governments worldwide are increasingly adopting policies to encourage student mobility, with 35 per cent of countries now setting official targets to increase outbound student numbers.

Regionally, East Asia and the Pacific accounted for 26 per cent of outbound students globally in 2023, followed by South and West Asia with 21 per cent.

Nigeria’s position as the third-largest source of international students reflects both the ambitions of Nigerian students and the growing demand for quality higher education opportunities abroad. It also highlights ongoing concerns around local  university capacity, industrial actions, infrastructure challenges, and the search for globally competitive education and career pathways.

As global demand for international education continues to rise, Nigeria’s role in shaping future student mobility trends is expected to become even more significant in the years ahead.
