The Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) has urged the federal government to include sign language in the country's official language and educational curriculum.

The Nigeria National Association of the Deaf (NNAD) has called on the federal government to integrate sign language into the country's official language and educational curriculum. This appeal was made by Acting National President Haruna Tsafe during the keynote address at the 34th Annual General Meeting and General Election held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Tsafe emphasized that incorporating sign language would significantly enhance accessibility and inclusion for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. He urged state governments to adopt the Disability Bill to remove environmental and physical barriers and foster cultural understanding.

Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, reaffirmed the state's commitment to enacting the Disability Bill, highlighting the importance of addressing the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities. Representing the Commissioner, Ayotunde Lawal, Special Adviser to the Governor, noted that the meeting's theme, “Sign Up For Sign Language Right,” underscores sign language as a vital tool for achieving equality, education, and employment opportunities.

Adeleye stated that the Ogun State government has made significant strides in promoting sign language rights, collaborating with the disability community to ensure these rights are recognized in national policies across all sectors. She pointed out that the current administration has positively impacted the disability community through various empowerment initiatives and the provision of essential resources.

Earlier, Ogun State Chairman of the Association of the Deaf, Rasheed Salami, expressed gratitude to the state government for its support in hosting the annual general meeting and its ongoing commitment to the welfare of individuals with disabilities.

This appeal by the NNAD aims to pave the way for greater inclusivity and equality for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals across Nigeria.
