OAU Zoological Garden Tragedy: Funeral Held for Assistant Chief Veterinary Technologist Killed by Lion

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community mourned the loss of Assistant Chief Veterinary Technologist, Olabode Olawuyi, who tragically lost his life in a lion attack at the university's Zoological Garden in Ile-Ife. The funeral service for Olawuyi was held on Wednesday, with family, friends, and university staff in attendance to pay their last respects.

The funeral service, which took place at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ile-Ife, was followed by the burial at the OAU Cemetery. Pastor Olu Okotoni delivered a poignant sermon, reminding mourners of the inevitability of death and the importance of preparing for the afterlife. He praised Olawuyi's sacrificial act of bravery, highlighting his selfless attempt to rescue a junior staff member from the lion's attack.

"We believe we will see him again on the glorious day. He was a born-again Christian until his last breath, and he lived a fulfilled life," Pastor Okotoni remarked.

Olawuyi's untimely death occurred on February 19 when he bravely intervened to save a colleague who was initially attacked by the lion. The nine-year-old lion responsible for the tragic incident was subsequently euthanized, as confirmed by the OAU Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.
