Polytechnic Lecturers Suspends Planned Strike Following Resolution with FG

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced the suspension of its planned strike over the newly released scheme of service for polytechnics, following engagements with the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

The Association of Polytechnic Lecturers made this announcement on Monday, citing productive discussions that led to the resolution. ASUP had initially opposed the newly unveiled schemes of service, approved by the Federal Government for Nigerian Polytechnics, effective from 7th June 2024. The union alleged that the new schemes lacked inclusive stakeholder input, particularly from their union and other stakeholders in the polytechnic sector.

As a result, the polytechnic lecturers issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the suspension of the implementation of the new scheme or face various forms of industrial action by the union.

Fortunately, a breakthrough was achieved within the ultimatum period. ASUP's leadership was invited to a tripartite meeting with NBTE and the Federal Ministry of Education on 19th July. During the meeting, it was agreed to suspend the implementation of the flawed document and initiate a review process in line with the union's demands.

Subsequently, the NBTE suspended the document through a circular, leading ASUP's NEC to reconvene on an emergency basis on 22nd July to review their earlier stance. After thorough consideration, the union decided to suspend the planned industrial action, acknowledging that their demands had been substantially met.

“The NEC therefore resolved to suspend the earlier scheduled industrial action in recognition of the fact that the demands of the Union have been met substantially. We appreciate our members’ steadfastness in the face of the unearned provocation; the intervention and inputs of different stakeholders, including Rectors of Polytechnics, sister staff Unions, and the students through the National Association of Polytechnic Students," the union affirmed.

“Our union shall therefore dedicate energy and time in the coming days to preparations for the review exercise to finally produce a document that will reflect the aspirations of the sector,” ASUP concluded.
