Professor Andrew A. Nkom, a distinguished professor of instructional technology from the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), delivered the 48th Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

The lecture, titled "The Fourth Type of Communication: Breaking the Deterioration Cycle in Nigerian Education," provided an opportunity for Professor Nkom to share his extensive expertise with the academic community.  

In his lecture, Professor Nkom introduced the Instructional Communication Concept Model and discussed its application in the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) program. He highlighted the deteriorating quality of education in Nigeria, noting high failure rates and subpar outcomes in tertiary education. He explained that a reflective and problem-solving approach led to the development of the model, which aims to address these challenges and improve the teaching profession in Nigeria.

The PDE program, which is based on the model, has been tested and validated through workshops and approved by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). The program’s scope has expanded to cover lower levels and neglected areas of education, completing a unified teacher production system for Nigeria. According to Professor Nkom, the framework has the potential to professionalize teaching and reform the education sector.  

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Theophilus Daniel Lagi, congratulated Professor Nkom on this milestone achievement. Professor Lagi emphasized the university's commitment to supporting professors in sharing their research and expertise for the benefit of the academic community.

Goodwill messages were delivered by several dignitaries, including Ishaya Akau, former Provost of Kaduna State College of Education; Professor P.S Alaku, Dean of the Faculty of Education; Professor Ayuba Guga from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, ABU Zaria; and Professor Akaro Mohammed Mainama, Former Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi.  

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a plaque of honor to Professor Nkom by the Vice-Chancellor, recognizing his significant contribution to the field of education in Nigeria.
