SUBSIDY: Governor Peter Mbah Unveils Generous Worker Incentives Amid Fuel Subsidy Removal in Enugu State

In a recent announcement, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has revealed a financial reward initiative for state workers, ranging from N10,000 to N25,000, effective from December to April 2024. The governor emphasized that this move is aimed at mitigating the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

During a joint news briefing with organized labor leadership at the Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah expressed optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations for a new minimum wage, hoping for a swift resolution. He underscored his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Enugu State workers and outlined various social interventions being implemented alongside the cash transfers to enhance their lives.

Governor Mbah shared plans to increase the state's social register enrollment from 43,000 to 260,000, demonstrating a commitment to uplift more citizens from poverty through cash transfers and additional social interventions. He acknowledged the ongoing negotiations with labor unions since the petroleum subsidy removal, highlighting the comprehensive approach taken to provide palliatives and social services.

Furthermore, the governor announced a flat payment scheme for all categories of workers, including local government employees, primary and secondary school teachers, and civil servants. This flat payment, ranging between N10,000 and N25,000, is set to continue until April 2024.

Governor Mbah also addressed the committee reviewing the minimum wage, expressing hope that by the end of April, a new minimum wage would be established for the state, paving the way for its implementation.

Reaffirming his administration's commitment to achieving a zero per cent poverty headcount index by 2031, Governor Mbah disclosed a budget allocation of N1.5 billion for social development programs, focusing on water and sanitation in communities. Additionally, plans include constructing 260 model primary health centers and 260 smart schools, along with teachers' quarters.

The governor concluded by highlighting the state's expanded social register, accommodating up to 260,000 indigent individuals, which will serve as the platform for cash transfers to support the less privileged.

In response, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Fabian Nwigbo, and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Benneth Asogwa, expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah for his proactive measures in addressing the welfare of Enugu workers. They commended the governor for his commitment, noting the positive impact on the people of Enugu State, especially the workers under his administration.
