The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Kayode O. Adebowale, has emphasized the need for strict ethical governance in the use of artificial intelligence within the university system.

He made the remarks at the inauguration of a Committee on the University Policy on Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence for both staff and students.

Adebowale described AI as a transformative tool with significant benefits for innovation, learning, and problem-solving, but warned that its uncontrolled use poses risks comparable to a “wild fire,” requiring deliberate human oversight.

He stressed the urgency of establishing a comprehensive policy framework to regulate usage, ensure accountability, and prevent misuse across academic and administrative environments.

According to him, the committee’s formation is long overdue, adding that once operational, the policy will set mandatory ethical standards guiding how AI is used by members of the university community.

He charged the committee to develop a robust and forward-looking framework capable of matching the rapid evolution of AI technologies globally.

The committee is chaired by Professor O.F.W. Onifade, who described the initiative as timely and aligned with global conversations, including recent UNESCO engagements on AI governance.

Onifade assured the Vice-Chancellor of the committee’s commitment to producing a policy that meets international standards and addresses institutional realities.

Other members include Professors A.S.O. Ogunjuyigbe, A.B. Adeyemo, Ibiyinka T. Ayorinde, Dr Oluyemi E. Adetoyi, Dr O.E. Gbadegesin, Dr A.A. Ayodele, and Dr I.B. Ayinla, who will serve as secretary.
