UniAbuja ASUU Defies VC's Mandate, Continues Strike Amidst Attendance Register Dispute

In response to the ongoing strike, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rasheed Na’Allah, issued a mandate requiring lecturers to sign a daily attendance register, effective immediately, to mitigate the strike's impact and resume academic activities. However, the UniAbuja ASUU chairperson, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, stated that the union members would not comply with the directive as the strike continues.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) branch has announced that its members will not adhere to the management's directive to sign an attendance register indicating their resumption of lectures. This decision comes amidst a strike initiated by ASUU on May 2, 2024, to protest various issues, including violations of establishment laws and irregular appointments and promotions of staff members.

The Vice Chancellor extended the deadline for signing the attendance register after considering the views and pleas of concerned members of the university community. He instructed staff members who are away from the university to email their respective deans and copy the registrar. Deans are required to compile the attendance list and submit it to the registrar before the close of office hours.

Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh expressed dissatisfaction with the Vice Chancellor's directive, stating that it was intended to intimidate lecturers without following due process. He highlighted issues such as illegal employment procedures and the regularization of newly employed individuals without due process, which he deemed unacceptable.
