The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has concluded a two-day capacity development programme to boost the professionalism, legal awareness, and operational efficiency of its security personnel.

Organised by the Staff Training and Development Unit, the sessions ran from Monday, August 10 to Tuesday, August 11, 2025, at the Faculty of Science Boardroom, drawing experts from academia, law enforcement, and emergency response.

Opening Remarks
Director of the Staff Training and Development Unit, Mrs. Aderonke Asiwaju, described the initiative as “long overdue,” citing the growing sophistication of criminal activities. She commended Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, for prioritising security training to safeguard lives and property on campus.

Day One Sessions:
- Security Awareness and Orientation – Mr. Omotosho, UNILAG Security Unit Coordinator, on proactive measures such as surveillance, access control, and CCTV monitoring.
- Legal Limitations and Responsibilities of Security Operatives – Dr. Abiodun Odusote, Associate Professor of Public Law, on distinguishing private security from police powers, lawful conduct, and gender-appropriate arrest procedures.
- Crime Charges, Investigation, and Criminal Procedures – SP Comfort Alabi, DPO of Sabo Police Station, on evidence handling and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

Day Two Sessions:
- Emotional Intelligence and Security Operations – Dr. Sylvester Atiri (Department of Psychology) on decision-making, conflict resolution, and empathy in protocols.
- Application of Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Security – Mr. Abiola Olatubosun (ABS-CITS) on AI tools for crime prevention and problem-solving.
- Emergency Response and Crisis Management – Mr. Femi Giwa (Lagos State Command & Control Centre) on procedures and inter-agency coordination.
- Incident Report Writing – Dr. Waziri Adisa (Department of Sociology) on effective documentation and scene reporting.

Outcome
The training equipped participants with enhanced skills in surveillance, legal compliance, crisis management, and reporting, reaffirming UNILAG’s commitment to being a safe and conducive environment for learning and research.
