UNILAG Trains Sub-Deans and Course Advisers on Student Success
The Staff Training and Development Unit of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) successfully conducted a two-day intensive capacity-building workshop for Sub-Deans and Course Advisers from Wednesday, February 11, to Thursday, February 12, 2026.
The exercise, which drew participants from all faculties across the institution, focused on the theme "Advising with Impact." The training was designed to equip academic mentors with modern tools and empathetic strategies to enhance student performance, mental well-being, and overall academic navigation.
Recognising that Course Advisers and Sub-Deans are the primary point of contact for students, the workshop addressed critical areas of institutional support, including:
Data-Driven Advising: Utilizing academic records to identify and support students at risk of underperformance.
Effective Communication: Enhancing the "soft skills" required to guide students through personal and academic challenges.
Policy Implementation: Ensuring a uniform understanding of university regulations regarding course registration, grading, and graduation requirements.
The Staff Training and Development Unit emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader commitment to professionalizing student support services. By empowering advisers with high-impact strategies, the University aims to create a more resilient and successful student body.
The two-day session concluded with a call for participants to view their roles not just as administrative, but as transformational in the lives of the students they serve.
