The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has commissioned what is described as the first university-based Driving School in Nigeria, an initiative established by the FUNAAB Alumni Association.

The facility was officially commissioned on February 11, 2026, and positioned as a strategic intervention to strengthen road safety awareness while enhancing practical life-skill development within the university community.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Olusegun Idowu, described the project as a reflection of purposeful alumni engagement and institutional advancement. He noted that the initiative demonstrates how alumni associations can serve as strategic partners in driving sustainable development and enterprise within the university system.
In his welcome address, the Global President of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, Otunba Bolaji Gbadamosi, underscored the importance of complementing academic qualifications with practical competencies. With a student population exceeding 25,000, he explained that the structured programme—combining classroom instruction with supervised practical sessions—would instill responsible driving culture both on and off campus.
The Driving School will be managed by Mr. Bamidele Olalere, Chief Executive Officer of Olabam and a FUNAAB alumnus with over 25 years of professional experience in driving education. Training fees have been subsidised to ₦40,000 for students and ₦55,000 for staff, below the prevailing standard rate of ₦65,000. The facility will also support participants in processing driver’s licences and provide refresher training programmes.
Also speaking at the event, the Assistant Route Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Ademola Adesanya, highlighted the broader safety implications of structured driver education. He emphasised that driving schools are critical not merely for licence acquisition but for cultivating knowledgeable and responsible drivers, thereby reducing road accidents.
University officials, including the Registrar, Dr. Titus Adeniyi, and the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Festus Adeosun, commended the alumni body for what they described as a forward-looking and impactful intervention.

Prior to the commissioning, the Alumni Global President led the Vice-Chancellor’s representative, principal officers, and top alumni executives on a guided tour of the ongoing construction of the Alumni Guest House located behind the Alumni Building.
