UNIZIK Moves to Secure Fairer Tax Regime for Staff

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has initiated concrete steps to ensure a more equitable tax assessment for its staff following growing concerns over excessive tax deductions.
The move was spearheaded by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, who on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, hosted the Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), Dr. Greg Ezeilo, at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
The meeting brought together key members of the university management, including the Bursar, Mr. Gozie Egwuatu; Prof. Pius V. C. Okoye, Director of UNIZIK Business School and a tax specialist; and Prof. Biereenu Makodi-Nnabugwu, Dean of Students Affairs. Discussions centered on addressing inconsistencies in tax assessment and establishing a fair, transparent system for university employees.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi expressed confidence that the engagement would bring lasting relief to staff who have long raised concerns over heavy tax burdens. She commended Dr. Ezeilo for his collaborative approach and reaffirmed UNIZIK’s readiness to work with the state’s tax authorities to achieve a sustainable resolution.
The university management remains optimistic that the outcome of the meeting will result in a more balanced and just tax regime for all staff members.
