The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has officially ended its 2022/2023 academic session and has started preparations for the 2023/2024 academic year. As part of these preparations, the Dean of Students, Professor Edwin Omeje, announced in a memo that all hostel occupants must vacate the premises by Sunday, April 30, 2024, to allow for fumigation and extensive cleaning .

The official occupancy for the 2022/2023 academic session ended on April 24, 2024. To facilitate a smooth transition into the new academic session, the memo directed that all belongings be removed and room keys returned to hall officials by 12:00 noon on April 30, 2024. Fumigation is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 29, 2024, with cleaning activities following from Thursday, May 2, to Sunday, May 5, 2024.

While all students must vacate the hostels for fumigation, some exceptions have been granted. Final-year students completing their projects, as well as students in Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and other programs with extended academic schedules, may remain in the hostels until May 3, 2024. However, these exceptions require students to have paid fees for the 2023/2024 academic session and secured appropriate accommodation.

Furthermore, to accommodate these exceptions, Bello Hall and Eyo-Ita hostels will be fumigated last, providing housing for Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine students, respectively. Similarly, Alvan Hostel will be used to house their male counterparts. Final-year Agriculture students still in academic activities will also be accommodated in Eyo-Ita Hall during this period.

Professor Omeje stressed the importance of complying with the evacuation schedule and instructed all exiting students to keep their cupboards open for fumigation purposes. Failure to comply will result in sanctions, including denial of access to the hostel portal and other disciplinary measures.

In closing, the Dean wished all students safe travels and a successful 2023/2024 academic session, urging them to be law-abiding and uphold the university's values. The memo was also distributed to key university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, DVCs, Registrar, Bursar, and Deans of Faculty.
