Young Graduate Tragically Killed as Truck Rams into Her POS Shop

A heartbreaking accident in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, has cut short the life of Cynthia Jonathan, a promising young woman and graduate of Taraba State University, who was struck and killed by an out-of-control truck while attending to her customers at her point-of-sale (POS) shop. 

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the bustling Mile 6 Market — a popular commercial hub in Jalingo. 

According to eyewitnesses, a truck laden with shaft sand suffered a sudden tire blowout while in motion. 

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and ploughed into the market space, slamming directly into Cynthia’s shop. 

The impact was fatal. Cynthia was said to have died instantly before help could arrive. 

Her untimely death has left the community in shock, with many describing her as hardworking, kind-hearted, and full of potential. 

Cynthia had graduated from Taraba State University and completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program two years ago. 

In the absence of immediate employment, she took the initiative to start her own business, offering POS services at the local market to support herself and contribute to her family’s well-being. 

“She was focused, determined, and doing something meaningful with her life,” one mourner at her burial said. 

“It’s painful that such a hardworking young woman had her life taken so suddenly and violently.” 

She was buried the following day, Saturday, June 28, surrounded by grieving family members, friends, and sympathizers who came to pay their last respects. 

The tragic event has once again sparked conversations around road safety, particularly the regulation of heavy-duty vehicles in busy commercial areas. 

Authorities are reportedly investigating the accident, and calls have been made for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards to prevent similar disasters in the future.
