Mr. Uchenna Okwuolu, an agriculture expert, has called on the Ministry of Education to extend the duration of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) to six months, arguing that the current three-month period is insufficient for students to acquire essential practical skills.

He made the call while delivering a lecture titled “Career Pathway and Emerging Opportunities in Agriculture” at the 101 Career Conversations Series of the University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL). Mr. Okwuolu emphasized that an extended SIWES period would allow students, particularly in the Faculty of Agriculture, to apply classroom knowledge in practical settings.
Highlighting the diversity of careers in agriculture, he noted that students could explore traditional farming, animal husbandry, high-tech roles in science, engineering, and business, with a focus on food production and sustainability. He also underscored the importance of studying Crop Science, Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics, Family and Consumer Science (FCS), and Animal Science.
In her address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Stella Chiemeke, represented by Professor Regina Arisi, stressed that careers are no longer inherited but created, and success belongs to the most adaptable, innovative, and courageous. She emphasized that agriculture encompasses technology, entrepreneurship, climate intelligence, value chains, food security, policy, agro-business, and global competitiveness. She encouraged students to transform challenges into opportunities and knowledge into wealth, while affirming that UNIDEL will continue to provide platforms that expose students to real opportunities, mentors, and career pathways.
Director of the Career Development and Counseling Center, Dr. Olufunke Chenube, commended the Vice-Chancellor for her visionary leadership and support for initiatives that enhance graduate readiness and employability. She explained that the programme targets students from 100 to 300 levels, helping them make informed academic choices, develop relevant skills, and build strong career identities aligned with their interests and long-term aspirations.
The event, held at the 1,000-capacity Main Campus Hall, Agbor, was attended by Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Dr. Ugboh Onyemaechi, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Dr. Jude Igborgbor, Director of Academic Planning Dr. Mrs. Felicia Mormah, as well as Heads of Departments in the Faculty of Agriculture.
