AKSU VC Charges Newly Elected ASUU EXCO to Improve on Members’ Welfare
The Vice-Chancellor, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Prof. Nse U. Essien has charged the newly elected executive committee of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) AKSU Branch to pay more attention to improving the welfare of its members.

He gave this charge during a courtesy visit by the Union at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
Speaking during the visit, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the essence of the Union is to ensure members have a sense of belonging because the interest of the University and Union is paramount. “Unionism is service, so think proactively and adopt methods that all members will derive benefits. Management is ready to work with ASUU to make sure we touch the lives of members. As much as possible, work towards the growth and development of the University, staff and students so we can achieve our aim of teaching, research and community service,” he urged. He encouraged them to carry out case studies on federal and state universities in order to manage issues properly through good negotiation skills.
Prof. Essien encouraged the leaders to have a good relationship with the Visitor of the University and create an atmosphere where he can be free to interact with the Union; adding that they should work with the Visitor, University Management and members as a team to have good results. He also advised the executives to take advantage of sabbatical leave and leave of absence which the ‘Conditions of Service’ provides for, follow the proper administrative channels, adhere to ASUU laws and procedures to avoid unnecessary disruption of academic activities. He noted that AKSU has improved in University ranking due to less industrial actions. He gave an update on ongoing projects and assured of Management’s commitment to managing resources effectively for the progress of the University. He congratulated them on their successful elections and prayed for God’s guidance throughout their tenure.
In his response, the Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Nnamso Frank said that the Union will adopt consultation and consolidation as its policy and asked Management to have a new mindset about the Union. In his words, “We are not for altercation but to support the University Management. This will be different. Thank you for this opportunity.” He made requests for staff quarters, secretariat, permission for ASUU congress and Management’s prompt response to issues.

Eno-Ibanga, FNIM; Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Administration, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Akaninyene Ibanga; Senior Assistant Registrar and Head, Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Gabriel Otu and other staff of the same Directorate; Executive members of ASUU.
