A lot of Nigerian students who participated in the just-concluded UTME exams have complained bitterly about their English Language scores and claimed it doesn’t truly reflect their performance.

Alex Onyia, the founder of Educare, one of the top educational platforms in Africa, addressed the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board about the low grades of students in English.

He took to his X page @winexviv to express concern about the recurring poor grades of JAMB UTME candidates in the English language. Mr. Onyia pointed out that even candidates with overall scores over 300 had low grades in English, stating that this did not truly reflect the candidates’ performances.

He further attributed this poor performance to the JAMB body, calling for scrutiny of the UTME questions and answers as well as the grading system. “Can you make available the detailed breakdown of the English Language scores, questions and answers, including the weighting and grading criteria used to arrive at the final result?” he asked.

He also emphasized that this would help boost the integrity of the Body. “This will help boost the integrity of your system and will also assist the students in clearing their doubts,” he added.
