ASUBEB Warns Schools Against Using Children as Labourers Ahead of Resumption

The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has issued a strong directive to schools in the state to comply with the September 23, 2024, resumption date, ensuring that teachers are prepared to begin academic activities without delay. This announcement comes after the state government postponed the school resumption from September 16 due to a Public Holiday.

Lydia Onuoha, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, emphasized the importance of readiness for the upcoming academic year during a press briefing in Umuahia. She highlighted that all local government area (LGA) education authorities should finalize class assignments and other necessary preparations to welcome students back to school.

In her statement, Onuoha warned schools against the practice of using students for labor, particularly in clearing bushy school compounds. She stressed, “I urge all schools to ensure that the school environment is cleared come Monday, September 23, 2024. Schools should engage the services of workers to assist with this task instead of involving children.”
